Introducing Squails, a vintage game crafted by Jaques of London in 1839. This remarkable set features an excellent condition slide-lid pine box, adorned with its original green paper descriptive label on the lid.

Inside, you will find four ebony squails in various colours and four boxwood squails, all in superb condition. The set also includes a measuring ruler for accuracy, as well as a pewter squail jack from 1839, ensuring that all components are original and true to the period.

Squails is an engaging old English game played on a round table. The objective is to strike the discs with the heel of the hand from the edge of the table toward a small lead target at the center, known as the "jack." If the jack is moved more than six inches, it is replaced. Players use the sixteen squails strategically; once played, they are scored from 16 points for the closest squail to the jack down to 1 point for the furthest. Players often aim to knock an opponent’s squail away while positioning their own near the target, similar to the game of bowls.

Box dimensions: 22.5 x 11.5 x 3cm

A truly unique, antique game and very hard to find in such good condition. A little bit of expected wear to the box and pieces, but otherwise in very good condition, even the original labels are still present. Grade 1 under the Hoyles Vintage Grading System.
