“Combat” is an engaging strategy game produced by Merit in 1968, expertly designed to incorporate simple wargaming concepts that appeal even to non-wargamers. A key focus of the game is the importance of adapting tactics to the terrain.

The game board features a grid of squares to help track positions, movement, and distance. It consists of two halves that come together at the start of each game. Players control the red and blue armies using an array of cleverly designed plastic miniatures, including tanks, self-propelled guns, and ground-attack aircraft. A complete set includes 40 pieces per player—8 planes, 16 tanks, and 16 guns—though not all are required for every match. The rules suggest that beginners start with a maximum of 16 pieces each for a more manageable experience.

To enhance gameplay, “Combat” includes clear plastic overlays representing various terrain features, such as hills, forests, roads, airfields, and mines (the explosive kind, not mineral). These terrain overlays can be customised for each game, featuring a sticky backing to keep them securely positioned on the board, allowing players to create diverse and challenging battlefields while enjoying a good degree of stability during play.

All four corners of the box lid have been tape repaired with invisible tape, and there is a little ink staining. The boards and contents are in very good condition. Grade 2 overall under the Hoyles Vintage Grading System
