"England Expects" is a rare vintage card game with a British Royal Navy theme, published by Pepys around 1940. It features beautifully illustrated cards depicting various British military navy scenes, backed by an image of Nelson's column. This lovely example of a rare British card game highlights the Royal Navy and dates back to the early years of World War II.
The First and Second World Wars generated a lot of games some of which were meant to be fun and others had an educational purpose. These cards are divided into four suits indicated by a Crown, Anchor, Lifebelt and Pennant, and are numbered from one to eleven with the exception of the Crown suit which is numbered from one to ten. The crown is always the Trump suit. The game was devised with the help of Francis E McMurtrie, who was, at the time, editor of Jane's Fighting Ships.
The game is complete with all 44 cards. The cards are crisp and clean, showing little sign of use. However sadly the original rules and box are missing, we can attach a copy of the rules if requested. Grade 2 under the Hoyles Vintage Grading System.
