Mah jong set with five drawers - 1920s
An excellent example of a 1920s five-drawer wooden Chinese mah jong case with drop-in lid, brass handles and decoration. The set includes a complete set of 144 playing tiles, plus four blank spares. The bottom drawer also contains four bone winds, a quantity of tally sticks and small boxed dice.
The tiles are made of bone and split bamboo which are incised with the designs and then painted with three colours. Originally designed for sale in European markets, the tiles thus show Arabic numbering as well as the Chinese motifs. The condition of the case is remarkably fine for its age, as the stained beechwood used is prone to splitting along the grain (which it hasn't done in this instance). A wonderful set.
