In 1831 Charles Darwin set off in a naval ship to study natural history in South America, changing the course of science forever. Here he devised his famous theory of natural selection – that all species evolve from other species. This theory is set out in his definitive work, “On The Origin of Species” published in 1859. In 1871 he published a further work, “The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex”, showing how humans evolved from apes.
