Elizabethan chess pieces

Designs taken from the major players in the Spanish Armada invasion scare of the 16th century, the two sides to this set are differentiated by an ebony/ivory colour or by hand painted enamels in red and blue colour ways.

Key figures:

  • King: Lord Burghley (4" tall)
  • Queen: Queen Elizabeth I
  • Bishop: Matthew Parker, the Archbishop of Canterbury
  • Castle: Sir Walter Raleigh
  • Pawn: Ships of the English fleet, which defeated the Spanish Armada

Made from cold-cast powdered marble and resin in Somerset.

We have pictured the antique finish set on a 21" Kingston board and the hand-painted set on a 21" Jericho board (sold separately).
